Episcleritis

The episclera is a thin layer that covers the sclera. The episclera can become inflamed, a condition termed episcleritis.

In episcleritis, the eyeball is red without swelling of the eyelids or discharge or pain. The redness may not include the whole eye. Episcleritis is usually benign, and no testing is required.  It does not damage the eye or indicate an underlying disease.

Episcleritis does not require treatment, as it will almost always resolve on its own.  Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs may help speed resolution in some cases.
